No data or bandwidth limits
Nothing to meter and nothing to throttle. You are not being nudged toward an upgrade by being given a deliberately worse connection.
Wirebraid Technologies LLC
We are building FreeChoice VPN: free permanently, not a trial, with the speed, low latency and privacy features that until now came only with a subscription.
Why we are building this
There is unmet demand for genuinely free VPNs, and the free products that exist are usually far weaker than the best paid ones — capped, throttled, starved of servers, or quietly monetised in some way the user never sees.
Paid VPNs have the opposite problem. Most stopped innovating years ago: the same feature list year after year, competing on price and marketing spend rather than on what the product actually does for the person using it.
So we set ourselves two goals:
Our only source of revenue is subscriptions from paid users. No advertising, no sponsorships, no promotions, no data exchanges of any kind.
The product
One VPN with a free tier and a paid tier. The free tier is the product, not a demo of it. Everything below is common to both.
Nothing to meter and nothing to throttle. You are not being nudged toward an upgrade by being given a deliberately worse connection.
No account, no email address, no user identifier. We do not store your IP address at any point, on any server or relay, and we do not record the sites you visit, what you look up in DNS, or what you download. Nothing we keep could tie one session to another, or to you. What we do keep is deliberately dull: how many connections each country asks for, and how loaded each server is.
Your video call stays smooth while a large download runs in the background. Normally a big transfer fills up the queues along the path and everything else has to wait behind it — the effect known as bufferbloat. The tunnel keeps those queues short, so small, urgent traffic is never stuck behind bulk traffic.
You get your share of a server’s capacity whenever you need it, no matter how hard anyone else on that server is pulling — one heavy user cannot take the lot. When others are idle their share is lent to you, so nothing is held back for the sake of it.
Same countries, same machines for free and paid users. Nothing routes paying users to emptier hardware; what a subscription buys is a larger share of a busy server, not a separate and better network.
Your traffic is carried by the same HTTPS encryption that protects the most sensitive sites on the web, banking included — a real, authenticated TLS 1.3 session. On the wire it is ordinary web traffic, which is why it still connects on networks that block traditional VPN protocols.
It is also built for links that lose packets. Loss on poor Wi-Fi or a weak mobile signal is made good between your device and our server, instead of being passed all the way back to the site you are using, and the tunnel tunes each path in real time for the best speed it can get.
Instead of choosing between all of your traffic and none of it, Auto protects only what needs it: sites that are not secure, sites blocked for you, and ones you add yourself. On a network you have not marked as trusted it also covers everything that is not already an encrypted connection, and forces DNS onto an encrypted resolver. Ordinary HTTPS keeps going direct unless the site is on your “always protect these websites” list — and on open or weak Wi-Fi, everything is tunnelled. You can still switch the VPN fully off whenever you want. Split tunnelling by destination, split DNS and custom lists are normally paid-plan features, where they are offered at all.
Moving between Wi-Fi networks, or losing signal for a few seconds, does not drop what you were doing. The session is re-established and in-flight data resumes exactly where it stopped, so a video call in progress keeps running instead of reconnecting.
Malware, phishing, tracker and advertising domains are detected and blocked on your device, so the protection stays on even when the tunnel is completely off.
Paid tiers
Paid features are additions for people who want more privacy or better reach. None of them are things we removed from the free tier.
We never issue per-user tokens, so there is nothing in our systems that could link a subscription to a session, or one session to another. The app itself — signed by Apple, and not modifiable on a normal device — tells our servers only whether it is entitled to the paid tier. That single bit is deliberately all we learn.
Each server divides its own capacity by a fixed weighting rather than first-come-first-served, and paid traffic carries the heavier weight. Because the weights are shares rather than strict priority, paid traffic can never starve free traffic: free users hold a guaranteed minimum share of every busy server, and get its full speed whenever the paid tiers are idle.
Shared VPN addresses collect blocks and CAPTCHAs. Paid users get addresses that are chosen and managed for reputation, so more of the web simply works.
Traffic passes through randomly selected forwarding proxies between your device and the exit server, so no single point on the path — your ISP included — sees both who you are and where you are going.
Larger, more frequently updated filter sets for malware, phishing, trackers and advertising, with finer control over what is blocked and where.
Status
FreeChoice VPN is in development. We are building for iPhone, iPad and Mac before anything else, and the apps will be distributed through the App Store.
Please check back here. There is no sign-up form because we are not collecting email addresses, and details of the beta will be posted on this page when there is something to test.
